Abstract/Notes
Specific Detail Info The purpose of this study was to find out the categories utilized and the frequencies of different categories of hedges devices used by native- non native writers. The data taken from the journals were 20 research articles (RAs) those were 10 by native writers and 10 by non-native writers. Those from the linguistic journals that were selected randomly and their introduction and conclusion sections were chosen and read to find out the existed hedges devices. The obtained hedges were classified based on T. Miller’s (1997) taxonomy. The results revealed that, native and non native writers showed various categories in applying hedges and the most preferences using category 1- modality (Modal Auxiliary verbs). After categorizing the hedges and applied chi square procedure, it was found that there was no significant difference between native and non native writers in terms of applying hedges devices in introduction and conclusion sections. The result shows that non-native and native writers have similar attitude toward using the hedges devices in introduction and conclusion sections of RA. This finding can be interpreted in a way that what is important in utilizing hedges devices as the linguistic phenomenon is the discipline influence not the nationality or cultural backgrounds of the writers. Thus, the non-native writers use hedges like native and this shows that the hedges devices are explainable and can be used by non-natives like natives. Keywords: Hedges devices, taxonomy, modality
