Specific Detail Info One of the goals in learning English as a foreign language is the mastery of communication skill. Through sets of exercises in the class and the will be ended with the examination, they students may achieve their communication competence. Naturalness in communication needs to be achieved by the students . Usually naturalness is communication is identified by the use of gambits during their communication . So, the use of gambits reflect the students’ naturalness. This research entitles The Use of Gambits by The Students in Speaking 4 Final Examination. The purposes of this study are to find out what types of gambits used by the students during the Speaking 4 Final examination and the frequency in using gambits among those students. Data were gained by recording 6 students’ examination conversation or debates and then they were transcribed in order to be able to read, classified and then analyzed. The data then analyzed qualitatively and by referring to some theories of gambits as suggested by Keller and Edomnson/House. Form this research the team found that There are six types of gambits used by the students during their examination such as opening gambit ( , linking gambits, responding gambit, clarifier and starter. Among those gambits, the students often used linking gambits mainly because ( 24 times) and but (16 times ). Furthermore, the students in conversation 4, used more gambits than other groups. They used gambits 35 times, while the other groups used only 15, 19, 28,9 and 19 times of those gambits.
