Abstract/Notes
Specific Detail Info The current study is a survey aimed at investigating to what extent the seventh semester students of FBIB- UNISBANK are aware of American culture upon completion of Cross-Cultural Understanding (CCU) class. A total sampling of 25 students participated in the study, consisting of 13 males and 12 females. They were further classified into Age Group (AG). AG1 consisted of 19 people aged from 20-24, AG2 consisting of 3 people aged from 25-29, and AG3 consisting of three people aged from 30-35. The subjects were given a survey questionnaire—constructed on MonkeySurvey Software—focusing the four variables of American culture, (1) American Fashion, (2) American Foods, (3) American Dating, and General Codes of American Conducts. Interviews were held to verify their responses and to further investigate the stance toward American culture. The software (MoneySurvey) was also used at the analytical level. The findings showed that most of the students had positive attitudes towards American Culture, and some of them had adopted the America’s ways of life in terms of fashion, food, and dating. Few of them adopted American social conducts with little modification. However, the interviews yielded otherwise. They adopted American fashion, food and dating at the cognitive level in the sense that they still maintain their Indonesian thought patterns—not fully civilized. Most surprisingly, within the frame of human equality, Indonesia and American shared quite similar cases. Nevertheless, individualism and honesty referred to different things as viewed by American and Indonesian. The study recommended that CCU class be made to adopt the competence-based curriculum with the students actively exploring information for themselves. Further researches were encouraged to investigate non-English Department students employing Likert Scale with more sophisticated statistical application. Key Words: culture, American, fashion, foods, dating, codes of conducts
